|
| What does it mean when I get the message "Zero-length draws detected" during Gerber import? |
| A:
zero-length trace is a draw (D01) which begins and ends at the same (X, Y) location. It can be caused by a number of reasons: (1) The original data had higher resolution but was exported in lower resolution and because of that the endpoints of short draws are made to coincide (remember that coordinates in Gerber are integers). (2) Some software packages use this method to flash pads, instead of using the flash command (D03). (3) The original data actually contained zero-length traces. The most common place to find zero-length traces is in areas filled by traces or when pads are drawn with (sometime short) traces. |
| I have just received and installed a new activation License Code file for my program(s). When I try to launch my program(s) I get an error message that says my license has expired and the program(s) shut down. |
| A: The most common scenario is a licensing issue caused by rolling back the computer’s calendar to a date earlier than the current date. Also, advancing the computer’s calendar too far ahead will result in similar errors and cause the programs not to function. Set the computer’s calendar to the current date and time. |
| I’m running the latest version of PentaLogix CAM software and no matter what I do I can not get any of my data to display on the screen. All I see on the graphics screen is a big white field and a black window or reference frame. |
| A: Using a white colored background will wash out all
other colors on the screen. Right click on any layer and go to the Color
option. Click on Background and select any color other than white. The
default background color is black. You can also go to Setup and Restore
Defaults; however, this will restore all settings for all options. Note: This is the same for all the PentaLogix CAM programs: ViewMate/ Master/ Plus/ Pro and CAMMaster. Tip: You can save black toner or ink when printing without having to change the background color to white. Leave the background color black and go to File- Print- Colors and use either the Black On White or Colors On White Background options. You will end up printing black or colored elements on a white background. |
| I down loaded the latest version of ViewMate onto my desktop and installed it onto my computer. Now every time I click on the icon the installation starts over again. How do you launch the program? Is something wrong with my download? |
| A: The file that was downloaded from the PentaLogix web site is the installation program. After installing ViewMate, you no longer need this program and can delete it if you wish. To actually launch the installed ViewMate program, from your desktop go to Start- Programs- PentaLogix- ViewMate. You can create a shortcut from this and place it on your desktop. |
| I just installed my new software and when I tried to run it a splash screen came up on the screen for a second and then the program shut down. This happens every time I try to run the program. |
| A: Make sure you have the latest version of your Operating
System, Internet Explorer, critical updates and patches loaded on your
computer. Older versions of some Operating Systems do not include or support
files that are required for PentaLogix software to run. Tip: If you are running Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP, make sure you have at least Internet Explorer version 4.0 installed on your system before installing your PentaLogix software. This will ensure that you have the required shared system files loaded on your computer. |
| I just installed my new software and got a License Expired message when inputting a new License Code File supplied by PentaLogix. |
| A: There are two possible causes for this. (1) The license for the software is either an evaluation or rental whose time period has expired. A new License Code File is required to continue using the software. Contact PentaLogix for further assistance. (2) The calendar of the computer with the software loaded on it may have been rolled back to a year date earlier than when the License Code File was created. This is a security function of the Sentinel System Driver/License Manager software. Set the correct calendar date and start your program again. |
| When printing/distilling to Adobe PDF (Adobe Distiller 4.05) the layout is turned upside-down. The print preview is OK, the printout is also OK, but the PDF file is presented upside-down. |
A: All of our CAM programs generate graphics in bitmap form, even internally. Bitmaps are then sent to the screen for rendering. We don't use any of the Windows graphics routines, one reason why our graphics is faster than our competitors'. As a side effect of this, bitmaps are also generated for printing, even if one tries to print to a PDF device. So printing can only be done to devices that accept bitmaps. Purely vector devices, such as pen plotters, are not supported for this reason. There is no way that we can generate PDF commands from the CAM software. Bitmaps on the other hand can be as accurate as you want. With the "Print to bitmap file" commands in version 8.1, you can specify the resolution of the bitmap (make it 10000 dots per inch if you want, you will just get a very large file). Tip: Another quick fix would be to mirror the data first, then create your PDF file. The image will then be created in the desired orientation. |
| When I try to Open my file, I get an Error 28 message: Cannot determine file type. |
A: Starting at version 8.0 of ViewMasterEZ/ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster,
you can now load Gerber files by using the Open command. If you try
to load a non-BIN or non-Gerber file, you will receive the Error 28
message: Cannot determine file type. In order to load aperture or drill
files, you must go to File- Import and then to the appropriate menu.
You must do this also for EXPORTING files. |
| In my software, when I go to Help- About why are there are ?’s listed for the Serial Number? |
A: If you are running an installation that was downloaded
from the internet, you will be prompted for enter a User ID Number.
This is the four digit number that is assigned to your User’s License,
also known as your Key Number which can be found printed on your hardware
security key/dongle. If you do not enter the User ID number and continue
on with the installation, you will end up with ?’s in your Help menu.
If you are running installations from a CD, you will be prompted for
your CD-Key. This is the code usually found on the CD’s jewel case.
It will tell the system which type of license you will be using, what
programs to install and what your User ID Number is. The CD-Key will
start with either NL or FL, followed by the feature codes, a dash and
then the User ID/Serial Number. If the dash and User ID Number is not
typed in with the rest of the code, the installation will continue and
you will end up with ?’s in the Help menu. |
I have a Single User Network License and when I shut down one PentaLogix program and try to launch another I get a message that all licenses for my program are being used. What could be the problem? |
A: Sometimes it takes a few minutes for a license to be released
from the License Server Software after a program is shut down. After
you shout down a program, wait a few minutes. The License Server broadcasts
every few minutes and scans the entire network for programs being used.
If there are no other programs in use (on your computer or on another
computer of the same network) that are a part of your software suite,
then the license will be released and available for use. |
| I installed my new version of software for a Stand-Alone License and when I was prompted for a License Code File I got an error message stating that my file does not contain a license code for my program. This file worked for my previous version. Is this a bug? |
A: No, this is not a bug. License Code Files are version specific.
If you were issued a License Code File for version 7.x (i.e. 7.5, 7.7),
it will not work for version 8.x. You must contact PentaLogix with your
Locking Code (it is displayed in the same Dialog Box that prompts for
the License Code File) and a new License Code File will be made and
e-mailed to you. |
| I am trying to plot film of a drawn plane layer made up of thousands of traces. The file is taking a long time to load into my photoplotter and the plot time is even longer. How can I reduce the file size and increase plot speed? |
A: Most up to date photoplotters can plot polygon data. Converting
the drawn data to polygon data will decrease file size exponentially,
in which case usually take less time to load. The plot time will depend
on the machine’s ability to process polygon data. To convert the data,
select/highlight all the data on the layer to plot by clicking the Select
All button or press [Ctrl+A] on your keyboard. Then go to Edit- Edit
Selection- …Per Board Layer. Everything selected will be converted to
polygons. |
How can I make a picture of my data and paste it into a document file? |
| A: Display your data as how you want it shown in your document. Then go to File- Print to “.bmp” File- Current View. This will allow you to save a standard Windows Bitmap file that can be edited in a graphics utility such as Paint or inserted directly into a text/document editor. |
| I’m trying to make sure I have proper impedance. How do I find the total length of a specific net or chain of traces? |
A: There are two methods for doing this. 1)You can select
a specific chain of traces on a single layer by going to Select- Chain
and choose Branching or No Branching. Then click on an endpoint of the
chain in question. This will highlight all the traces connected or “chained”
together. 2) Or if you want to select a chain (or net) that runs through
multiple layers, you can extract a netlist first. Then place the cursor
on a pad or trace endpoint of the net in question and press [Shift+A].
The net number will show up in the display window at the top of the
screen. Click the Net ONLY button and then click the Global Select button
to highlight that net on all layers. Once you have your traces in question
highlighted, go to View- Selection- Properties. This will display the
total length of all traces that are selected/highlighted. |
| How do I display the properties of an element? |
| A: There are 3 ways to do this: Turn off the "ONLY" button for the DCode display at the top of the screen. Make sure the Selection Tool is turned off, move the cursor to the element in question and 1)double left click or 2)press [Shift+A]. These will display the DCode number, shape and size, and net number. 3)You can also go into Properties Mode. Go to Go- Closest- Properties Tool. This will allow you to continually single click on any element and display its properties. |
| How can I move the absolute origin (0,0) to line up to an element on my board? |
| A: 1)You must either move the board and line up the desired element to the (0,0) position, or 2)go to Setup- Absolute Origin, align the cursor to the pad or trace where you want the new (0,0) origin to be and press [Enter]. |
How do I align layers? |
A: To make sure the layers line up properly, you will have
to move them manually. Start with 2 layers. Layer 'A' is anchored and
'B' will move. Make sure all "ONLY" buttons at the top of
the screen are turned off. Find corresponding elements on layers 'A'
and 'B'. Highlight all elements on layer ‘B’. Press [Shift+M] on the
keyboard to activate the move command. Align the cursor to the element
on layer 'B' and press [A], then [Enter]. This will leave a target on
the element. Align the cursor to the element that you want to line up
to on layer 'A' and press [A] and then [Enter]. Layer 'B' will line
up to layer 'A'. Repeat the procedure for every layer you wish to align.
When you're done, press [Esc] to deactivate the move command. |
| How do I generate split planes for the Vector Netlist? |
| A: Ctrl-E to build splits for Plane layers has been changed to Edit- Build Contour. It works the same as the old software, generating a separate DCode of each individual split. Make sure the split layer is labeled properly in the F10 Layers Menu, and all the splits from one plane layer are placed on the same split layer before running the Vector Netlist. |
| How do I print at a different scale than the actual board size? |
| A: You can set the option in File- Print- Scale- By Factor. This way you can change the image size of the print without having to scale the data, which would make the actual board size larger or smaller. |
| When I try to open my file, I get ERROR 61: Not a valid job file. |
A: The File- Open and File- Save commands are for PentaLogix
job files (a.k.a. BIN files). To load Gerber, aperture or drill files,
you must go to File- Import and then to the appropriate menu. You must
do this also for EXPORTING files. |
When I import my Gerber file, all the traces and pads have no size or shape. |
| A: More than likely, the Gerber file is RS274D (a.k.a. Basic Gerber), and there should be an additional aperture list or file. Import the aperture file, or type in the apertures manually into the F5 DCode Mapping Table. Once done, the elements will be properly displayed. |
| How do I change layer colors? |
| A: There are two methods:1)Go to the F10 Layers Table and left mouse click on the color for the layer you wish to change and a color chart will appear. 2)On the layer/color display on the main view screen, right mouse click on the layer you wish to change colors on. A pop up menu will display. Select Color option and the color chart will appear. |
| Can ViewMasterEZ, ViewMasterPLUS or CAMMaster import rout or CNC files? |
| A: No, not at this time. |
| I can see pads, but can select only traces. |
| A: There is an element display control in the upper left-hand corner of the main viewing screen. There you can select what types of elements you can work with. There is an option for ANY which allows you to select any type of element. |
| I try to align to an element, but the cursor only snaps to a certain pad or trace. |
| A: Check the ONLY button for the DCode display at the top of the main viewing screen. If the button is pressed, it means that whatever DCode is showing in the display is the ONLY one that you can work with. Turn the button off and you will be able to select or align to elements of any DCode. |
| Why do the elements disappear when I select them? |
| A: Check the Element Visibility buttons (they look like little blue eyeglasses). These are ON/OFF toggle switches. You can turn on or off pads, traces, unselected and selected elements. If the elements you select disappear, then check to see if the visibility button for selected elements is turned off. |
Can I use ViewMasterEZ, ViewMasterPLUS or CAMMaster to convert RS274D (Basic Gerber) into RS274X (Extended Gerber)? |
| A: Yes you can. Import the Basic Gerber file(s) and the apertures, then export the files as Extended Gerber. |
| How can I measure the distance between two elements? |
| A: 1) You have the option to either measure from the center of an element or the outside edge. Go to View- Distance. Then select your first point and left mouse click or press ENTER and then move the cursor to the second point of measure. Or 2) highlight the two elements in question and then go to View- Distance- Edge to Edge. This will display both center to center and edge to edge distances on the status toolbar. |
| How do you delete unwanted elements? |
| A: Turn on the selection tool, via button on the Editing tool bar or the hot key [S]. When you click on an element it will highlight white and you can delete it by pressing your [Delete] key on your keyboard or by clicking on the Delete button on the Editing toolbar. You can drag a selection window to select a group of elements, or hold down the [Shift] key and click on desired elements individually, and delete multiple elements at the same time. |
| I get a message G36/37 encountered when I read in my Gerber files, and I only get outlines of areas that are supposed to be filled. What happened to the fill? |
A: In Gerber code, the G36/37 are automatic polygon fill commands.
PentaLogix software does not support these commands at this time. ViewMasterEZ/ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster
will remove these commands from the Gerber file, leaving just the polygon
outline. However, you do have the option to write the codes back into
the file when you export as Extended Gerber. |
What does it mean when I get the message Zero-Length Draws, Continue (Y/N)? |
| A: Zero-length draw is a trace that’s begins and ends at the same (X, Y) location. These can be found in areas filled in by traces, or drawn pads that were made with short traces. In ViewMasterEZ/ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster, you have an option to preset what to do when the system encounters Zero-Length Draws during file import. You can delete these points or replace them with a matching flashed pad of the same size aperture. Go to File- Import- Gerber- Options- File Interpretation and choose the setting for Zero-Length Draws. |
| I can move the pointer, but the crosshairs do not move. |
| A: The cursor and the pointer are detachable. The SPACEBAR is the toggle switch to connect/disconnect the pointer/cursor. |
| How do you output an IPC-D-356 file? |
| A: In ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster, create a netlist in the F02 format. F02 is the PentaLogix IPC-D-356 file. |
| In CAMMaster, when I try to extract a raster netlist, I get a message stating that layer #n is not the last copper layer. What does that mean? |
| A: In the F10 Layers Menu, the order of the board layers must be sequential for Raster netlist extraction. This is referring to the B Layer column. Layers 1 though N must numbered in the B Layer column as 1 through N. With the Top Side Component layer in the layer 1 position and numbered as 1 in the B Layer column, and the Solder Side Component layer is loaded last in the stack up and given the highest number in the B Layer column. Vector netlist does not take into account the B Layer column. |
| Can PentaLogix software import HPGL2 format files? |
| A: Yes. |
| Can PentaLogix software export HPGL format files? |
| A: Yes, in a limited subset format called HPGL Cutter Code primarily used for stenciling. This will output all F D Code type data in HPGL format. |
Can ViewMasterEZ/ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster import DXF files? |
| A: Not at this time, but PentaLogix does have a bi-directional DXF to Gerber converter. It is called LAV501. Please contact our Sales Department for more information. |
| My Crescent30® photo plotter gives a message regarding an unrecognized/ invalid Dcode. The DCode is a thermal/ heat relief shape. What can I do to plot this correctly? |
| A: The Crescent 30 can accept RS274X format. From File- Export- Extended Gerber go to Options and select the option Output Thermal Primitive, and export the file. If the machine still can not plot the heat relief, there is a work around in ViewMasterPLUS and CAMMaster. Go to the Tools drop down menu and select the Generate Outlines option. There you can create a polygon outline of the thermals. Then use the Fill Polygon option under tools and fill the thermal polygons. This will create Drawn Thermals that the machine can plot. |
| I load in my Gerber file that has the %KODX*****Y*****J*****% code for knock outs, and nothing shows up. What is wrong? |
| A: Nothing is wrong with the file. Knockouts files are a part of a combination of files that make up a particular layer. We refer to these types of files as ‘Paint & Scratch’ layers. Paint are copper layers and Scratch is what is removed (or knocked out) from the copper. To view a scratch layer, you must first load the paint layer into the F10 Layers menu, directly followed by the scratch layer. Scratch/Knock Out layers must have the Scratch option checked in the F10 Layers Menu. To view a Knock Out as a stand-alone file, just turn off the Scratch option for that layer in the F10 menu. |
| I try to run a DRC and get the error: Nothing to Check. And my active layer is set and I can see the data on the screen. What could be wrong? |
| A: Go to the DRC options menu and make sure the setting to Check Data in Reference Frame is turned off. More than likely, the reference frame is drawn around an area with no data. You can run DRC with this option turned on, just make sure you place the reference frame around the data to check. |
| When I import my Gerber files, I get the message: Plotting Area Exceeded. What does this mean? |
A: This means the data format of the Gerber is not set up properly.
Go to File- Import- Gerber- Options and examine the Data Format options.
These options must have the same format settings as the files were written
out in from their original CAD system. Set the correct formats and reload
the files. The most common cause for the Plotting Area Exceeded message
is incorrect Left and Right of Decimal settings. If the left and right
of decimal format is unknown, you can use the Import Directory feature
to load your files (Available in ViewMaster/ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster).
|
I was able to load my data, but I can not see it on the screen. |
| A: 1) Make sure the layer visibility is turned on. On the Layers Tool Bar, each layer with data loaded should have an * next to the layer number along with a solid colored box. If the box is crosshatched, then the visibility is turned off. Just double click on the layer to toggle the visibility on. 2) With all layers turned on the data may also be off screen. Zoom out using your Page Down button on your keyboard until you can see your data then zoom in (Page Up) for a closer look. |
| My software was working fine until I suddenly received an error message: Key removed or failed and then the program shut down. |
| A: Other than the PentaLogix security key (dongle) being removed from the computer, the most common cause of this is when an external device is plugged into the back of the security key (such as a ZIP drive or desk top printer) and is being used at the same time as the PentaLogix program. This can block the licensing software from detecting the key and cause the program to shut down. As a test, remove all external devices, including other security keys for other programs, and try to run your PentaLogix software with only the PentaLogix key plugged into the parallel port. If the key still works, replace all other connectors. If not, contact the PentaLogix Technical Support Group for further assistance. |
| When I try to print my layer, all I get is either a big black box or a blank sheet with a header at the top of the paper. |
A: The PentaLogix CAM products print by sending a raster bitmap
of the image to be printed to the printer driver. Some drivers cannot
accept very large size bitmaps. This is usually the problem with lower
end printers, but we have found it also with some high end printers.
Sometimes this problem is fixed by installing the most recent driver
for the printer that you are using. Unfortunately this does not always
fix the problem and there is not much we can do about this because our
software always draws into a bitmap (we cannot use the standard Windows
drawing commands). |
I installed my PentaLogix software and Node-Locked License Manager on my computer with Windows NT/2000 fine when I was logged on as administrator, but when I logged on as a normal user and tried to open the software, I received a key error message and the program closes. |
A: The following is how to set up the Node-Locked License Manager on a Windows NT work station with NTFS, where the user does not have administrative privileges: 1. Log on to the computer as administrator. 2. In Explorer select the Lavenir directory and right click. 3. Select Properties and click on the Security tab. 4. Give all required users all access privileges to the directory. 5. Return to the desktop and click the Start button. 6. Select Run and type regedt32.exe into the Open box and click OK. 7. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE- Software- Elan- LavenirLM. 8. From the Security menu on the top tool bar, select Permissions and give all required users All Access (Full) privileges. Note: Software versions 7.5 and above will not have this problem. These versions use updated Sentinel System Drivers and License Server software compatible with NT/2000/XP operating systems. |
| Is there an easier way to arrange my layers in order than to manually transfer and swap layers? |
| A: 1) Available in ViewMaster/ViewMasterPLUS/CAMMaster, under File- Import there are two additional options to load data either from a Directory or directly from a ZIP file. During these operations, you can arrange the order of the layers prior to loading the files. If you already loaded the files, you can go to the F10 Layers Menu and 2) number the proper order of the layers in the B Layer Column. Then right click on the B Layer button at the top of the column. You will get a pop up dialog that will allow you to Renumber Board Layers or Order Layers by B Layer. Choose Order Layers by B Layer and the layers will rearrange themselves in the order you assigned. |
